Where to go for left handed guitars and left-handed bass guitars. Part One: left-handed Explorers
These days, with more and more major guitar manufacturers ceasing to make their products in left hand as well, one might well ask the question “where do I go for left handed guitars and left-handed bass guitars these days?”
In actual fact, there are definite guitar models that are popular with guitarists that you cannot get left handed at all. Some have never been available in left hand.
Fortunately there is one guitar brand in the world that makes left handed guitars and left-handed bass guitars only: Gaskell Guitars.
Gaskell Guitars (http://www.gaskellguitars.com) is from Australia, and was started by New Zealand-born left-handed guitarist Kevin Gaskell.
Gaskell Guitars has been going strong formally since 2006 and has become international renowned for left handed guitars, designed by a lefty, for lefties only.
Gaskell makes left handed guitars and basses that are otherwise not available in left hand option by original manufacturers. Here are some examples:
If you are a left-handed guitarist and you want to play, for example, an Explorer style guitar you will be confronted with the following list of facts to contend with:
a) Gibson, the original maker of Explorer guitars does not make left handed Explorer guitars.
b) Gibson no longer makes left handed guitars at all and you will not even get a left handed Explorer through their Custom Shop.
c) Hamer who also make Explorer guitars do not make left handed Explorers.
d) Dean Guitars make an Explorer as well, with their unique V-shaped Headstock. From time to time they do a few lefties. Limited colours though. Still, kudos to Dean for doing that!
e) Peavey make an Explore-esque guitar not the same as an Explorer but similar, but they do not make left-handed ones.
f) ESP no longer make Explorer guitars based on the original Gibson style ones, but make a more pointy version. It is possible they make their variant in left hand through their Custom Shop. No production left-handed versions are made.
g) At the beginners, entry level of the market, we have Rondo Music in the USA who brings in a Chinese-made Explorer style guitar which they do in 3 colours in left hand. It’s not the same shape as Gibson Explorer but is very definitely Explorer-derived. People in forums, generally rave about how “good” they are but what they mean by “good” really means “cheap price.” And cheap price equals “good.” Any guitarist who says one of Rondo Music’s Agile, SX, or Douglas guitars are “good” does not know what a “good” guitar is. For the price you pay (US $300-700) you could say the guitar was “good” only if you meant the price. Still, people seem to buy these and then replace all the cheap hardware and electronics for good stuff. But by the time you have done that you could have just bought a better quality guitar! Getting back on the subject, you can buy a cheap Explorer style guitar from Rondo Music. Their customer service appears to be excellent, and good on them anyway for offering a lot of cheap lefty guitars as well as right handed guitars. Hat’s off to you guys!
h) If you live in the UK, there is Gordon Smith Guitars, the UK’s equivalent of USA’s Gibson. You can get a left handed Explorer guitar from them. It looks exactly like a Gisbon. However the wait time can be up to 12 months, per reports. They are about double the price of a Gaskell.
Gaskell Guitars makes left handed Explorer style guitars. Their production models, the Classic and Classic II ( http://www.gaskellguitars.com/models) are similar to the original Gibson Explorers but with slight smaller, more rounded bodies and with a Gaskell original headstock, different from Gibson. No legal violations there!
For the left-handed guitarist wanting a more pro level guitar there are two choices: the Gaskell Classic PRO or the Gaskell Huntsman.
The Classic PRO is customizable and available by pre order. The Huntsman is a matt black gothic style Explorer with all the work to make it done in Australia, and fitted with EMGs.
Left-handed guitarists wanting a quality, gig ready, Explorer style guitar, there is really one place to get one from: Gaskell Guitars.
No matter where you live in the world you can get a Gaskell guitar or bass without too much hassle.

‘89 Live in Japan $9.99 Sometime in 1992/1993 a revamped Quiet Riot featuring vocalist Kevin DuBrow with Bob Rondinelli on drums (around this time Rondinelli had also filled in on an Aerosmith gig one night when Joey Kramer wasn’t available — call him Mr. Fill-In) performed at a little-known club in Billerica, Massachusetts called Mr. Tipps. It is one of those suburban gigs we call “the last rung on the rock & roll ladder” and it’s a pity because Quiet Riot had more than just a clever name, and more than the cachet of being the professional birthplace of guitar wizard Randy Rhodes. To those who don’t know the story, DuBrow faced a mutiny by the band he founded and Pasha Records released an album in 1988 with two different members, titling the disc, interestingly enough, after the first Japanese release by the original group. This DVD, ‘89 Live in Japan, comes from that strange lineup in between and features vocalist Paul Shortino of the group Rough Cutt as well as bassist Sean McNabb and an uncredited Jimmy Waldo — keyboard player from the groups New England and Alcatraz. Why Waldo is treated like a hired hand is one of those unique situations which seemed to develop after Flo & Eddie called Mountain’s organ player Steve Knight “the most useless man in rock & roll.” The statement was far from accurate, of course, but it was humorous and Mott the Hoople and Aerosmith would both push keyboardists to the side and pretty much off-stage after that infamous quip. Though the 1988 self-titled Quiet Riot album faced horrible reviews and little or no commercial acceptance, this DVD is actually quite enjoyable. As a live band, Q.R. had that long-hair-’80s-thing down pat. What replaces original vocalist DuBrow’s personality is a very slick and well-executed heavy metal show. “Stay With Me Tonight” might not be a rock & roll classic, but it comes off well live and along with the nine in-concert tracks there is a bonus of the video shot for “Stay With Me.” This is no mere clone band going t… |

1,000 Kisses $9.99 Patty Griffin’s third album, her first material to be released since 1998 (the absorption of her former label, A&M, in the Polygram-Universal merger left an album Griffin cut in 2000 in the vault, where it’s sadly likely to stay), strikes a stylistic middle ground between the stark voice-and-guitar approach of her debut, Living with Ghosts, and the eclectic textures of Flaming Red. 1,000 Kisses was mostly recorded live in the studio with a small acoustic band, including Doug Lancio on guitar and mandolin, Brian Standefer on cello, Giles Reeves on vibraphone and percussion, and Michael Ramos on accordion; the feel of the performances is close and intimate, with the occasional cough or footfall audible in the background, and these sessions capture more than a bit of the cin? ma v? rit? mood of Living with Ghosts. But if the album’s production style is subtle, it’s also a superb match for the material, and without forcing their hand, Griffin and the musicians can sway from the life-on-the-street swagger of “Chief” to the Latin romanticism of “Mil Besos” to the torchy late-night blues of “Tomorrow Night” without missing a step, finding a broad emotional spectrum in these low-key sessions. 13 $10.98 Amid all the acclaim that has deservedly seen him canonized as the patron saint of American doom metal, Scott “Wino” Weinrich has arguably never been busier than at the ripe young age of 50 (more like 80 in drug years), which sees him juggling solo albums, recordings with supergroup Shrinebuilder, and even performing reunion shows by ? 80s doom icons Saint Vitus. So the creation of yet another original power trio — this time named Premonition 13 and featuring old personal friend Jim Karow on guitar, Matthew Clark on drums, and no evident bass player — clearly begs two questions: namely, how does Wino find the time? And where does he find the inspiration? Well, in the case of Premonition 13’s debut full-length, 13, the answer to these questions would appear to be a far from romantic “in the rehearsal space” (apologies to anyone who was hoping to hear “at the crossroads”), given the obviously jam-birthed looseness displayed by most of these tracks. Furthermore, apart from a few atypical detours into forceful heavy rock (“Hard to Say,” “Deranged Rock ? n’ Roller,” the Hidden Hand-reminiscent “Clay Pigeons”), 13 is dominated and defined by a series of stoned-out, psychedelic doom jams — the nine-minute introduction of “B.E.A.U.T.Y.,” the cryptic “La Hechicera de la Jeringa,” the dreamy “Peyote Road,” etc. — doused in billowing clouds of guitar psychedelics. As such, Wino’s latest project may find the most favor among fans orphaned by the dearly defunct Spirit Caravan, for obvious reasons. 20th Century Blues $13.98 As the liner notes to this intriguing release tell, Faithfull had a long-simmering interest in German cabaret, particularly the work of Kurt Weill. It came fully to life via her role as Pirate Jenny in a staging of The Threepenny Opera in Dublin as translated by Frank McGuinness and her attendance at a workshop organized by Allen Ginsburg. After a series of initial performances with pianist Paul Trueblood, Faithfull took her revue of many classic songs from the mid-century, titled “An Evening in the Weimar Republic,” to the road. This particular recording is from a performance in Paris in 1996, showcasing both a smart selection of songs to work with and Faithfull’s own dramatic, interpretive skills with them. Kicking off with the aggressive-then-smooth bite of the Brecht/Weill standard “Alabama Song,” Faithfull and Trueblood show they make a great team — her distinct vocals seem almost born for the material, while Trueblood is a sure hand on the keys, both playful and polished. Weill remains the centerpiece of the show, in both his various collaborations with Brecht — standout tracks include withering versions of “Pirate Jenny,” “Salomon Song,” and “Surabaya Johnny” — and with other partners, including “Complainte de la Seine” and “Mon Ami, My Friend.” Friedrich Hollaender gets the nod twice, with a take on the eternal classic “Falling in Love Again” almost rivaling Marlene Dietrich’s original interpretation. The obvious comparison to make is between this album and Clark’s earlier compilation, the 14-track Greatest Hits 1994-2004, which was selling at a list price four dollars higher as of 2006 ($13.98 versus $9.98). That set features more of Clark’s big hits — “Better Things to Do,” “If I Were You,” and “Emotional Girl,” all of which reached the country Top Ten, are included, but they are not on 20th Century Masters – The Millennium Collection. Also missing are “Everytime I Cry” (which hit number 12) and “One of the Guys” (which was not a chart single). On the other hand, the less-expensive disc includes “The World Needs a Drink,” a Top 40 country hit released after Greatest Hits 1994-2004, and the minor chart entries “Suddenly Single” and “Unsung Hero,” which are not on Greatest Hits 1994-2004. Equilibrium? reveals classical notions of counterpoint and its relationship to the jazz tradition. ?
